"I am the best version of myself when I can successfully balance motherhood and making."

Ramona Residency is directly inspired by my own experiences participating in both family friendly and more traditional models of artists residences over the last decade. As an artist and single mother of two children, I understand first hand the complex challenges facing all artist mothers. We should not have to choose between our caregiving roles and our artistic selves. I am the best version of myself when I can successfully balance motherhood and making.

Ramona Residency, founded in 2024, is a nonprofit organization based in Houston and the first dedicated artist mother residency in Texas. Our mission is two-fold: enrich the Houston arts landscape by inviting artists to engage with the community through artist talks and pop up exhibitions while simultaneously creating opportunities to amplify the voices and creative practices of Artist Mothers.

The Ramona Residency offers each artist mother dedicated time, space, financial support, and networking opportunities with curators, collectors, fellow artists, and the local community to strengthen and diversify their artistic practice.

The two-four week fully funded residency includes furnished accommodations in a 2-1 home that doubles as the art studio along with a materials and a childcare stipend. Artists are chosen from an open call and application process. Half of the residency slots are dedicated to supporting BIPOC women. The residency hosts one artist and her family at a time with the hopes of inviting two or more artists each session in the future. Artists working in any medium and at any stage of their careers are invited to participate.

Each residency at Ramona concludes with a open studio and/or artist talk. Through free public programming, the Houston community is invited to engage directly with the artist and learn about their creative practice.

Ramona Residency is a located in 6th Ward and Arts District Houston, home to the largest concentration of artists in Texas. The home is tucked away in a quaint neighborhood making this an ideal residency for artist mothers and their families.
